What are Golf Clubs Made Of
67Golf clubs are probably one of the most famous sports equipment today. Why? This is because golf is a very famous sport, though many do not play and only a select fortunate people do, it still stands next in line with football, basketball, and lawn tennis. These clubs are also famous for being quite expensive. Shiny, sturdy, and classy looking as they are, they are also very reliable and durable; that is why they cost a fortune each. Of course, they would not be what they are without sheer excellent workmanship and quality materials. So, let us get to know what these golf clubs are made of.
In order for you to truly know the anatomy of a golf club, you need to dissect it in parts. There are two main parts that composes a golf club: the shaft and the golf club head. The shaft also has a lance or what people know as grip. The length of the shafts for each golf club type (woods, irons, hybrids, putters, chippers) differs. This is done so that a golf player can have various choices of swing movement and force. Golf club shafts also differ in their construction material. Three of the most famous materials for a golf club shaft construction are iron, wood, and titanium. The head of the golf club comes in different shapes, sizes, and weights. Moreover, they are usually made with materials like titanium. Well, most of today’s golf clubs are made mostly of titanium.
Historically, the very first types of golf clubs that have been made were carved out of wood. The most famous wood that the first golf club makers used for the shaft was the Persimmon wood. Later on, Ping – a famous golf club manufacturer – used laminated woods. Some other wood types that they used before were purpleheart, lancewood, orangewood, lemonwood, ash, blue-manhoo, and greenheart. In the middle of the 19th century, golf club makers started to turn their attention to hickory wood. The hickory wood has been the strongest wood ever used by manufacturers but they still were very prone to damage and breakage. The most notable move that breaks hickory wood golf clubs is the backswing. Club heads were usually made out of thorn, dogwood, pear, and persimmon. Later on, persimmon became the material of choice for club heads. Like the shaft of earlier golf clubs, heads were also very prone to external damage.
Manufacturers started looking for new materials for the clubs. At first they used iron; the result was better than they have expected. Golf players can swing more easily and comfortably and the ball flies smoothly. They have been content on iron until the discovery of titanium. It was much lighter yet still very durable. So, they used titanium since then. The result was even better than iron clubs. With the modernization of technology, carbon fiber was born. This new material easily became the choice material for golf clubs. They are much lighter than titanium, cheaper, durable, and they do not rust at all.
As time progresses, so does the golf club. What started out as something made of wood became a carbon fiber being. Next thing you know, golf clubs are made of asteroid metal.
